Pennsic Review in Full
The fighting was over all fun on the armored field. We were outnumbered by about 150 or so in the war points, but that just gave lots of chances to fight. The Midlands and Constellation retaking the bridge that we had lost in the 4th bridge battle was amazing. That rarely happens. I was on the bridge when the battle ended. So were easterners, so it was a no count bridge and since the East had three others, we did not fight it out. But we had been driven from it, fell back to the last bridge and came back to contend. It was great. Another highlight was leading the Midlands army again for one of the 5 field battles, when HRM called for the unbelted champions to join him. I missed the memo that Aethlemarc came to our side for that battle and as I led us through the Eastern foe, I said crap when I saw Aethlemarc come in. Then a hold was called and I saw the color of their tape :) The field battles were odd overall as Aethlemarc changed sides as mentioned and they simply moved the odds as bad one way as they had been the other.
The rapier mass battles were not as fun. The woods battle and port-a-potty ninja being the lowest of the low points. Realy, jumping out of a port-a-potty to do death from behind is someone's idea of honorable fun? I did enjoy getting to fight side by side with terrilynn even if it was on rapier bridge battles, which might bet the dumbest idea ever.
I also served on the Rapier Champions melee team. We got beat, but it was interesting facing Duke Roak and Duke Ed from Ealdomere as a team on that list. They had some amazing team work and I had the bad luck of finding the hay bale inside the list ropes. It was an honor to fight on this team as one of the five best rapier fighters of the Midlands.
The pickups were fun, but less of them in the second week. I blame the schedule of the battles and the day early ending to war for that. I still got my share, but not as many as I would have liked. I also fought in Tarl's Pole Arm tourney and the ACL triathalon format tourney, that I had the honor to win. That was the highlight of my war fighting on may levels.
I did not get to as many parties as I would have liked, but I did get to spend some quality time with people. I saw Marian of Heatherdale in concert, had a blast with the Thieves at the Known World Rapier Party, and enjoyed myself every night. Often with company...
But the most important thing at Pennsic was taking my new squire. After lots of discussions on his future plans, I took Hans to be my squire. I see a lot of myself in this young man and I am proud to have him serve at my side. I truly hope to see him made knight someday. He gets the ideals and has fallen in love with the SCA. I am already very proud of him.
Finally, as noted on facebook, this was the Bizzaro Midlands unit Terrae Finis composed the majority of the shield wall. The Thieves of Hearts armored contingent outnumbers the Von Brandenbergs and the same VonB's were mostly long weapons.
I look forward to Pennsic 43, my 20th anniversary as a knight
