The Three Stooges are scary dimwitted idiots that forgot the french fries when assembling the happy meal. Seriously. Since when is falling down supposed to be funny? And what's the obsession with pie? (Granted, I have a bit of a pie-obsession, yet it's at least *healthy*)

Give me Robin Williams, George Carlin, Bill Cosby... people like that.

Heck, most of the guests on Bob and Tom are pretty decent...

Or, well... Moonwulf's filks. Those can make me laugh something pretty hard.

And yeah... have you ever SEEN Warder Anton at work? I think that if that Bronze Ring thing doesn't work out for him, he should investigate stand up comedy...

none of those guys -- well, except maybe Moonwulf -- have anything without building on the Stooges.

Ever see Mork and Mindy?

Loved Mork and Mindy as a kid.

That doesn't mean that I needfully "get" some of what makes RW funny. I love his stand up, I love some of his other stuff... but when he starts going too reliant on falling on his ass and less making me think, I don't get it. Why again, is falling down funny?

it isn't because it isn't -- to you, and others, including the wife.

it is because it is -- to me, Bo, and literally hundreds of thousands of other people. Otherwise, no one would be watching.

Mork and Mindy was almost an homage to the Stooges! And Robin Williams could be the greatest living comedian.

I could write a feminist-theory laced dissertation on gender differences and humor, but then my husband would jump down my throat for stereotyping him, so instead I will just say:

The Three Stooges are boring and stupid. Physical humor without wit does nothing for me. Which is why I prefer the Marx Brothers, but that's another issue.

The Three Stooges are masters of what is referred to as “Low comedy”. Physical gags and pratfalls, people getting hurt, etc. I have never found that kind of thing funny. I’ll take intelligent “high comedy” any day.

I don't especially enjoy the Three Stooges; it's a style of comedy I've never really appreciated. Many other people clearly feel differently.

For the most part, physical humor or "stupid humor" types of comedy go completely over my head, leaving me merely confused at why everyone else is laughing. I maintain that I have no sense of humor, or what little I do is highly specialized into specific geeky realms. About the only comedy I can think of off the top of my head that I really enjoyed is The American President. Subtle puns and word plays, humor about politics or tech/geek things is usually something I will enjoy, even if I don't laugh quite as much as everyone else.

Can't let this be unanimous...

I have seen far too many people watch the Stooges, get a little smile on their face and as soon as they realize they are being watched they apply serious-face and proceed to give some lecture about how stupid the Stooges are.

Newsflash! Not liking the Stooges doesn't make you smart.

As for the question asked: they are classic by any usual definition of the word.

And, to ask a follow-up question: Do those of you who say you don't like the Stooges like Peter Sellers? Sellers is following directly in the tradition of the Stooges and yet an appreciation of his humor bears little of the stigma associated with Stooge fandom. How about Monty Python? A large franction of their stuff is "low" as well.

Yes, physical humor is funny...even to smart people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R6FI2LfqQ4 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXn2QVipK2o Funny every time! Can you watch any of that and not even get a little chuckle?

How bout a little "low" humor Python style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eMkth8FWno

Still no chuckles?

As for the Stooges...one of my all time favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqoaHW78Jco

Anyway, I think the key to allowing yourself to enjoy this kind of humor is in the complete over-the-top-ness of it. You know they aren't getting hurt, and they make it easy for you to know it by being so ridiculous. For instance, I can very much enjoy this kind of stuff, but rarely find the stuff done on Jackass funny.

OK...I'll crawl back into my cave now. :)

Stooges = not funny.

You spending 20 minutes hunting down those links and responding to these comments, on the other hand, is freaking hilarious :D.

Sorry, I have never found the Stooges funny, not even in a secret-smirk kind of way, tho I will grant you the "influential" thing. I need some wit or wordplay with my physical humor, the Stooges never had much of that--unlike, as I said, the Marx Brothers. I don't find all of Python funny either.

I think that sometimes "funny" depends on context. I have laughed at things in company that was laughing that I probably wouldn't have laughed at when alone. I think it's a perfectly human response to laugh because others are laughing, not because you find something funny per se. Remind me to show you the video of my daughter at her first birthday sometime, responding to the laughter of those around her.

And as for "low" humor, the Greeks did it before (and possibly better) than anybody else in the "entertainment world".

no.

Stooges(Zanie)=not funny.

Stooges(dwer)=funny.
Stooges(Ix)=funny.
Stooges(smlworldvortex)=funny.

Suggesting that men are not empathetic and then in the next breath simply insisting that something that thousands of people think is funny cannot be funny at all... now THAT's funny. Among other things.

It sounds like you are trying to make a case for a universal answer when in reality it is very subjective. You may very well like the Stooges when in your cave, many of us do not.

The analogies you are trying to draw are flawed in several ways. Peter Sellers did not follow the Stooges. He built on the traditions of Vaudeville, which influenced generations of comic actors. The bit with the dog is merely enacting a very old joke. The other is just not funny. There is also a variety of types of physical humor. The Stooges are masters of the “be stupid” and “hurt each other” types. That is not equivalent to the absurd, slap stick and pratfall of your other examples. Monty Python is the embodiment of the absurd. The Stooges are much more in the tradition of the Punch and Judy puppet shows of medieval days.

The problem for me is that I have never thought people getting hurt or being stupid was funny. It doesn’t matter if it is real or not.

We can argue about the tree of comedic influences (and it would probably be very informative) but I think Peter Sellers hitting himself in the face with a baton, doing various horrible things to his boss, beating the crap out of Cato when Cato jumps him, etc. is pretty much "be stupid" and "hurt each other" type of humor. He has other stuff in there as well of course, and I think he does it better than the Stooges do it...but I do think he's influenced by them, at least indirectly. As for your implecation that Sellers is vaudevillian and the Stooges are not...well, that's simply incorrect. If anything, the Stooges are closer to vaudeville (having lifted whole bits directly from vaudeville performers) than Sellers was. In any case, I'm not sure any of this matters to the point at hand...but the inner pedant could not be suppressed. :)

Similar arguments can be made for Python...and I think it's not too much of a stretch to say that the Stooges made plenty use of the absurd as well (the link above showing a good example I think).

In any case, I'm not intending to make a case for a universal answer...especially since I'm not sure what the universal question is here.

Stooges: brilliant in short doses. Marx Brothers and WC Fields: just brilliant. Today: the Coen Brothers, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino. A kidnapper in a wood chipper? How do you get better than that. If the Stooges were working today, they would have done the gag!

Waste of cellulose.

(sorry, I think their humor is juvenile at best, and pointless no matter what)..

(having said that, I can watch Bugs Bunny for hours, so I'm not exactly claiming the high ground on a mature sense of humor)

I've always hated the Stooges. Seeing people hurt themselves (even if it's fake) is not funny. But then again, I'm an EXTREMELY empathetic person. Besides, I don't like my comedy stupid.

For the most part, as an observation, I agree with the women vs. men thing on this. Most (not all) women are hard wired to be empathetic, it's part of the genetic maternal part of our evolutionary makeup. Most men (again, not all) are hard wired to be more aggressive and not to be as empathetic. Again, survival was based on the ability to conquer enemies. It's hard to kill someone or something when you can feel their pain.

I've always thought this would make a fascinating psychological study.

Just my $0.02

Dudes. Just read "Stranger in a Strange Land". Specifically the bit where Valentine figures out human humor.

Then please to look up the word "Schadenfreude" and contemplate.

And all you empathizers, don't tell me you've never laughed when anyone slipped and fell, or walked into a wall, or any other sort of shcadenfreude moment. I'm not buyin' it one bit.

Now...ask me what I think the socio-political significance of the Stooges was in regards to the time period that they come from as well as today's society. THAT is why I think they still have relevance today - as well as humor.
