Stunned
From the Imperium Seneschal

I have many, many thoughts on this but they are all going to wait until I have a lot more information.

I am off to Chaos Caraan where HerRM was going to be.

Two day lapse in membership while HRM Tessa was in the Hospital.

One aspect about all of this that I've thought is strange and foolish.

If one member of a royal couple is killed, or is incapacitated, or resigns, or a whole host of other issues, the reign carries on with a single monarch.

But membership lapse is, for some reason, different. It collapses the entire reign, for both people, even if the other member of the couple had good reason to believe that membership lapse would be an issue.

If she had resigned the Crown before going into the hospital, or if she had died, heaven forbid, then Lutr would still be king.

Actually, it isn't different

Corpora Says:
"Should anyone serving as a Royal Heir, or as Royalty, be found in violation of the membership requirements, that individual’s term ends as of the date of the membership lapse. Provisions of Kingdom Law dealing with the situation are in force."

So, if in fact only one of their memberships lapsed, Corporate says the other can stay on - unless, in this case, Midrealm law is different.

I believe that both memberships lapsed.

No, if only one of their memberships had lapsed, the other could have continued the reign. (as I believe has happened in another kingdom further west of here)

According to the letter from Tessa & Lutr, "...our membership had lapsed..."
Sounds like both memberships expired at the same time, which led to the reign being invalidated.

Sigh............

It was probably a family membership.

Oops. I am in error. And happy to be corrected.

(I suspect I am mis-remembering a discussion that occurred when Northshield's laws were adopted. Never y'all mind.)

I want to make it clear that I DO feel sorry for them, but I just wanted to put things in perspective.

the law is clear...but it hurts no less for it.

I'm more stunned by this than by the idiocy in the Outlands a few years ago. There was still time then, and the line did not fail. And the logistical issues this creates for next weekend!!

Yeeeowch. *sigh* I'm fairly stunned that this happened since, well, isn't it the big thing every fighter remembers? Maintaining membership means the ability to fight...and to hold office. *sigh* Sad.

*sigh*

this seems a bit on the just plain odd to me.

Couldn't they just say 'oops- got too caught up in crown touney and what not and forgot to send the check' and re-up thier memberships ASAP and go on with things without all this? Or is that me being "too nice" and "not understanding the way the real world works"?

Somedays, I just don't understand.
And other days- I'm not all that sure I want to...

The problem is the legal liability that comes with being the Crown. You aren't just king and queen, you are regional co-chairs, Middle region, Society for Creative Anachronism Inc. In the dual position you hold, you sign warrants - paperwork that certify people as members of the SCA Inc. Your membership as Crown/co-chair, those warrants - they all have to do with the Corporation's insurance and with the legal coverage and responsibility you get as a warranted officer.

Allowing the oops would probably invalidate the Corporation's insurance and liability. That doesn't sound bad, except that people sue, and they get hurt accidentally. Without that insurance, we're toast if something happens.

Pardon me - your paperwork doesn't certify tham as members, it certifies them as officiers. My bad in typing/thinking disconnects.

Yeah, its the big thing every fighter remembers....except when his wife is in the hospital for emergency surgery.

I know far worse things are happening in the world.
